Dawn on the jetty at Khecheopalri
Stay in Khecheopalri village and walk down to the lake at first light, when mist lifts off the water, birds call from the forest and the jetty is empty.

Day visitors from Pelling arrive from about 10 am. If you stay overnight in a Khecheopalri village homestay, you can walk down the path to the lake at dawn and have the jetty almost to yourself. In autumn and winter, mist often hangs over the water and lifts as the sun reaches the bowl.
Turn the prayer wheels as you walk in, then stand quietly at the end of the jetty. Local villagers sometimes come early to pray or light incense. Watch the surface: by local tradition, birds take away the leaves that fall on it.
Walk back up for breakfast with your host family, and ask them about the lake's stories. Accounts differ between families and communities, and hearing them first-hand is part of the experience.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Can I stay overnight near Khecheopalri Lake?
Yes. Khecheopalri village, above the lake, has simple family homestays, indicatively ₹1,200–2,000 per person with dinner and breakfast. Rooms are basic, with hot water by bucket in some homes. We book families we know and arrange transport from Pelling.
Is Khecheopalri Lake open early in the morning?
The lake is an open sacred site, and villagers visit early to pray. Formal ticket counters may open later. Ask your homestay host about the current practice. Keep silent and respectful, especially at dawn when people come for prayer.
Will I see birds clearing leaves from the lake?
It depends on luck and season. The tradition is that birds pick leaves off the surface; what most visitors notice is how clean the water stays. Morning is when birds are most active. Bring binoculars and be patient.
