Sel roti and tea at a Gyalshing stall
Wait for your jeep with a cup of milky tea and sel roti, the ring-shaped sweet rice bread of Nepali kitchens, at one of Gyalshing's morning stalls.
Sel roti is a ring of lightly sweetened rice batter, fried until crisp outside and soft inside. It is made at home for festivals such as Tihar and sold at morning stalls across Sikkim's market towns, often with aloo dum (spiced potatoes) or a cup of milky tea.
Gyalshing's stalls near the jeep stand serve travellers from early morning. Ask for it fresh; it is best warm. Momos, thukpa (noodle soup) and puri-sabzi are other common breakfast choices.
Prices are low and portions generous. Carry small notes, and avoid uncooked salads and unfiltered water if your stomach is sensitive.
