Most people in West Sikkim travel by shared jeep: Mahindra Boleros and Tata Sumos that run fixed routes when full. Gyalshing is the hub. Counters or informal stands sell seats for Gangtok, Siliguri and Jorethang, while local jeeps go to Pelling, Yuksom, Tashiding, Legship, Dentam and Uttarey.
Ask at the stand the day before for departure times; many leave early morning and return in the afternoon. Fares are low, indicatively ₹50–80 to Pelling and ₹150–250 to Yuksom or Uttarey. Luggage goes on the roof under a tarpaulin.
Seats are tight and the roads winding, so take motion-sickness tablets if needed and ask for a front or window seat. It is the cheapest and most local way to explore the district.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
How do shared jeeps work in Sikkim?
Jeeps run fixed routes and leave when full or at set times. You buy a seat at a counter or from the driver. Long-distance seats can be booked a day ahead. Fares are fixed per seat. Luggage goes on the roof, tied under a tarpaulin.
Are shared jeeps safe in West Sikkim?
They are the normal way locals travel and are generally safe, driven by experienced local drivers. Roads are narrow and winding. Avoid night travel, keep valuables with you and ask for a seat that suits you. Reserved cars are more comfortable.
Can I reserve a whole jeep?
Yes. You can book a whole vehicle, called 'reserved', for a fixed price, which is more comfortable and flexible. A reserved car from Gyalshing to Pelling costs about ₹300–500 and to Yuksom about ₹2,000–3,000.
