Summit day to the Goecha La viewpoint

The long day at the heart of the Goecha La trek: a 3 am start from Lamuney, past Samiti Lake in the dark, over moraine to the viewpoint at about 4,570 m facing Kangchenjunga at sunrise, and the walk back to Thansing.

Summit day begins around 3 am at Lamuney, at about 4,180 m. By headlamp, the trail passes Samiti Lake and climbs over moraine and boulders to the first viewpoint below Goecha La, at about 4,570 m by the Forest Department's figure. If the weather holds, you arrive near sunrise, with the south-east face of Kangchenjunga directly ahead.

Groups stay a short time, as cold and wind are severe, then walk back past Samiti Lake, now in daylight with Pandim reflected in it, to Thansing. The whole day covers about 14–16 km and takes 10–12 hours.

The pass itself and the higher viewpoints are closed to protect the alpine zone. Whether you go depends on weather and your health, not the schedule; a good guide will turn back if needed. Check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

Can I reach the actual Goecha La pass?

Normally no. Trekkers stop at the first viewpoint below the pass, at about 4,570 m by the Forest Department's figure, which faces Kangchenjunga directly. The pass itself, given as 4,940 m on Wikipedia, and the higher viewpoints have been closed to protect the alpine zone. Check current status before you travel.

What time does summit day start on the Goecha La trek?

Usually around 3 am from Lamuney, by headlamp, to reach the viewpoint near sunrise when the sky is most likely to be clear. Temperatures at that hour are well below freezing in October and November. Carry warm layers, gloves, a hat and a headlamp with spare batteries.

How hard is summit day on the Goecha La trek?

It is the hardest day: 10–12 hours and about 14–16 km over moraine and boulders, starting in the dark and reaching about 4,570 m. Fit trekkers who have acclimatised well manage it. If you feel unwell at Lamuney, tell your guide and stay back; the view is not worth the risk.
