The Dzongri trek: six nights from NJP

The short version of Sikkim's classic trek: Yuksom to Sachen, Tshoka and Dzongri, a sunrise climb to Dzongri Top over Kabru, Kangchenjunga and Pandim, and back down, in five to six walking days with a registered local team.

The Dzongri trek uses the first and finest part of the Goecha La trail. Day one climbs from Yuksom to Sachen at about 2,200 m through warm forest above the Prek Chu. Day two crosses to Bakhim and climbs to Tshoka at about 3,000 m. Day three goes through the rhododendron belt to Phedang and on to the open meadows of Dzongri at about 4,020 m.

Next morning, leave by about 4 am for Dzongri Top at around 4,200 m for sunrise on the Kangchenjunga range, then descend to Tshoka. A last day returns to Yuksom.

It is moderate but still takes you above 4,000 m in four days, so fitness, a slow pace and plenty of water matter. Group departures cost roughly ₹13,000–18,000 per person including tents, food, guide and park fees. Check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

How many days is the Dzongri trek?

Usually five to six walking days from Yuksom and back: Yuksom to Sachen, Sachen to Tshoka, Tshoka to Dzongri, a sunrise climb to Dzongri Top and descent to Tshoka, then Tshoka to Yuksom. With the drives from NJP, most trips are six nights in total.

Is the Dzongri trek good for beginners?

It is one of the better first high-altitude treks in Sikkim, because it is short and the views from Dzongri Top are close to those on the full trek. It still climbs above 4,000 m in four days, so you need to be fit, walk slowly and report any symptoms of altitude sickness to your guide.

How much does the Dzongri trek cost?

Group departures from Yuksom cost roughly ₹13,000–18,000 per person, including tents, food, guide, cook and park fees. Add shared transport from NJP, about ₹2,000–3,500 return, offloading at ₹400–600 a day if you want a porter, and nights in Yuksom. Figures are indicative for 2026.
