Spring trek through the rhododendron belt

Time the Dzongri or Goecha La trek for April and early May, when the forest between Bakhim and Phedang flowers in red, pink and white rhododendrons, with magnolias lower down and milder nights than autumn.

The trail between Bakhim and Phedang climbs through one of the finest rhododendron forests in the Sikkim Himalaya. From about mid-April to mid-May, depending on the year, the trees flower in reds, pinks and whites, and the forest floor is scattered with fallen petals. Lower down, near Sachen, magnolias flower earlier in spring.

Spring nights are milder than in autumn, which suits first-time trekkers. The trade-off is more afternoon cloud, so mountain views from Dzongri Top and the Goecha La viewpoint are best in the early morning and less certain than in October.

Flowering moves uphill as spring advances, so dates matter. Tell us your dates and we will advise on timing. Check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

When do rhododendrons bloom on the Goecha La trail?

Usually from about mid-April to mid-May in the forest between Bakhim and Phedang, with lower species flowering earlier and higher ones into May. The timing shifts each year with snow and temperature. If flowers are your main reason for trekking, aim for the last two weeks of April.

Is spring or autumn better for the Dzongri trek?

Spring, April to mid-May, brings rhododendrons, milder nights and more afternoon cloud. Autumn, late September to November, brings the clearest mountain views and very cold nights. Choose spring for forest and flowers, autumn for the best chance of seeing Kangchenjunga clearly.

Can I pick rhododendron flowers on the trek?

No. The trail is inside Khangchendzonga National Park, where collecting plants, flowers, seeds and rocks is forbidden. Photograph them instead. Stay on the trail to avoid trampling young plants, and do not break branches for firewood; cooking on the trek uses gas or kerosene.
