Early birds in the Rock Garden
The flowering shrubs and forest edges around the garden draw sunbirds, bulbuls, white-eyes and laughingthrushes in the early morning. A relaxed birding session for beginners, timed for opening before visitors arrive.
Gardens at this altitude, around 1,700 m, sit where subtropical and temperate birds overlap. Flowering plants attract sunbirds and white-eyes; bulbuls and minivets move along the forest edge; laughingthrushes call from the undergrowth. You do not need to know names to enjoy them, only patience and a quiet pace.
Arrive at opening time with binoculars and walk the upper paths slowly, pausing at the edges where garden meets trees. Spring (March to May) brings breeding plumage and song; October to December brings clear light and winter visitors. Opening hours vary, so check the day before.
A local bird guide from Namchi or Ravangla adds names and calls for about ₹800–1,500 for a morning. Combine the session with the forest road below Samdruptse for more species. Wear muted colours and keep phones on silent.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
What birds can we see around the Rock Garden?
Common species at this altitude include sunbirds, white-eyes, bulbuls, minivets, laughingthrushes and various flycatchers. What you see depends on season and luck. A local guide or a field app such as Merlin helps with identification by sound.
Does the Rock Garden open early enough for birding?
Opening hours have generally been from the morning, but exact times vary. If the gate is not yet open, the forest road between the garden and Samdruptse is good for birding at dawn. Check current status before you travel.
Do we need binoculars?
They help a great deal. A pair of 8x or 10x binoculars is ideal. If you have none, a phone camera with zoom can capture birds for later identification. Some guides carry spare binoculars; ask when you book.
