A night at a Hilley trailhead homestay
Sleep at the road-end in a small family homestay at Hilley, eat a hot dinner by the kitchen fire, and walk into Barsey before anyone else arrives. Basic, cold and quiet, and the best way to be on the ridge for clear morning light.

A night at Hilley is about timing. Day visitors from Okhrey, Soreng or further reach the gate from about 7 or 8 am; if you sleep at Hilley you can be on the trail at first light and at the Barsey ridge while the view of Kangchenjunga is still clear. The Soreng district website lists homestays at the sanctuary entrance, including Barsey Residency, Lali Gurash and Royal Barsey, and a few more families take guests in season.
Expect simple rooms with heavy quilts, possibly shared bathrooms, and meals of rice, dal, vegetables, eggs and pickle around the kitchen fire. Electricity and mobile signal can come and go. At about 2,750 m, nights are cold year-round, near freezing from November to March, so bring thermals, a warm hat and socks. Tea arrives early if you ask.
Book ahead from March to May, when rooms fill with rhododendron walkers; October to December is quieter. Rates have run about ₹1,000–1,800 per person with dinner and breakfast. Carry cash. If anyone in your group feels unwell overnight, with a bad headache or nausea, drive down to Okhrey in the morning rather than walking up.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Are Hilley homestays comfortable?
They are basic but warm enough with the heavy quilts provided. Expect simple rooms, possibly shared bathrooms and hot water by bucket. If you want more comfort, stay in Okhrey, 8 km below, where homestays are larger and better equipped.
Is there mobile network at Hilley?
Signal is patchy and depends on your network and the weather. Do not count on data. Tell family your plans before you go up, carry a power bank, and arrange your taxi pickup in advance rather than expecting to call one.
How do I book a homestay at Hilley?
By phone using the numbers on the Soreng district website or through us. Rooms are few, so book early for March to May. Confirm the rate, whether meals are included and the bathroom type before you travel.
