Walk down from Hilley to Okhrey
Instead of driving, walk the 8 km road and short-cuts down from Hilley to Okhrey after your Barsey hike, through forest and then Sherpa farmland, and arrive at your homestay in time for a late lunch. Downhill, quiet and an easy way to see the villages.

Once you are back at the Hilley gate from the Barsey ridge, you can drive down to Okhrey in 30–40 minutes, or walk. The road drops about 450 m over 8 km, first through forest and then through the farms and houses of Okhrey's upper wards. Villagers use short-cut paths that cut off some bends; ask at the gate or at a house which ones are open and safe.
The walk takes about 2.5–3 hours at an easy pace. Traffic is light: a few local jeeps and homestay cars. On clear afternoons you look south over the ridges towards the Darjeeling hills. Closer to Okhrey you pass prayer flags, chortens and the steps leading up to Ugen Thondroling Monastery, the village's Nyingma gompa built in 1950.
Walk only in daylight, keep to the inside of bends and carry water and a rain jacket. Knees take the strain on long descents, so trekking poles help. Arrange with your homestay for a car to collect you on the road if the weather turns. From June to September the road is wet and leeches gather on the short-cuts; drive instead.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
How far is it from Hilley to Okhrey?
About 8 km by road, with a descent of roughly 450 m. Walking down takes 2.5–3 hours at an easy pace; driving takes 30–40 minutes. A reserved taxi costs about ₹600–800 one way.
Is it safe to walk from Hilley to Okhrey?
Yes, in daylight and dry weather. Traffic is light, but there is no footpath, so walk in single file on the inside of bends. Use short-cuts only if locals confirm they are open. Avoid walking after dark or in heavy rain.
Can we walk after doing the Barsey trek the same day?
Many fit walkers do: Hilley to the ridge and back takes 3–4 hours, and the walk down to Okhrey adds 2.5–3 hours, mostly downhill. If your knees are tired, take a taxi instead. Start Barsey early so you finish before dark.
