First-light walk into the forest from Hilley
A short, unhurried walk along the first two kilometres of the Barsey trail from Hilley at sunrise, for travellers who want the forest without the full climb. Good for older walkers, families with small children and anyone who prefers birdsong to summit views.

Not everyone wants to walk all the way to the Barsey ridge, and you do not need to. The first two kilometres of trail from the Hilley gate are the gentlest, a broad path rising slowly through rhododendron, oak and bamboo. At sunrise the forest is still, light slants through the trees and flocks of small birds move overhead. You can walk 30–45 minutes in, sit, and walk back.
Buy your ticket at the checkpost when it opens, about ₹50 for Indians and ₹100 for foreigners per day in recent seasons. From March to May the lower trees flower in red and pink; from October to December the air is clearest and the light warmest. Wear layers, as it can be near freezing at dawn in winter, and shoes with grip for the roots and stones.
This walk suits seniors, young children and anyone arriving from the plains who wants to go gently at 2,750 m. Walk slowly, drink water and turn back if you feel breathless. Afterwards, take tea at a stall by the gate and drive down to Okhrey for breakfast. If you feel strong, carry on to the ridge another day.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Can older travellers visit Barsey?
Yes, if they walk gently and only part of the trail. The first two kilometres from Hilley are the easiest. At about 2,750 m, go slowly and drink water. People with heart or lung conditions should ask their doctor before going to this altitude.
What time does the Hilley checkpost open?
It usually opens early in the morning for walkers, but timings are set by the forest department and can change. Ask your homestay the evening before. If you arrive before it opens, wait for the staff rather than walking in without a ticket.
Is the first part of the Barsey trail steep?
No. The first two kilometres from Hilley are a broad, gently rising path with some roots and stones. It gets rockier further up. Shoes with grip are enough; you do not need trekking boots for this short section.
