How to make the trip
Private car
1.5–2 h · ≈ ₹2,000–2,500 one way
The simplest way. The road drops from Pelling through Gyalshing to Legship on the Rangeet, then climbs to Kaluk and Rinchenpong. Allow 1.5–2 hours with a short stop. Most drivers in Pelling know the route; agree the fare and whether they will drop you at your homestay gate in Rinchenpong.
Shared jeep
2.5–3.5 h · ≈ ₹150–250 in total
There is no regular direct shared jeep. Take a jeep from Pelling to Gyalshing, then one towards Legship or Jorethang, and ask for a connection to Rinchenpong or Kaluk. Changes make it slow, and services thin out after midday, so start early.
Via Jorethang
3–3.5 h · ≈ ₹3,000–3,500 small car
If roads via Legship are blocked, drivers may go via Jorethang, which is longer. This route does not use NH10. Road conditions on both sides of the Rangeet change after heavy rain, so check current status before you travel.
Fares are indicative. Landslides, snow and check-post timings change journeys: check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask
Pelling to Rinchenpong: questions
How far is Rinchenpong from Pelling?
About 31 km by road via Gyalshing and Legship, usually 1.5–2 hours by car. Kaluk is about 29 km. Although the two are close as the crow flies, the road drops to the Rangeet at Legship and climbs again, so it is slower than the distance suggests.
How much does a taxi from Pelling to Rinchenpong cost?
About ₹2,000–2,500 one way for a small car, indicative 2026 rates, more for an SUV and in peak weeks. Agree the fare before you leave, including any stops. Shared options need two or three changes and take much longer.
Should I stay in Pelling or Rinchenpong?
Both, if you can. Pelling has more sights, such as Pemayangtse and Rabdentse, and more hotels. Rinchenpong is quieter, with village homestays, an old monastery and a wide Kangchenjunga view. Two nights in each is a good balance for western Sikkim.
Is there a bus from Pelling to Rinchenpong?
Not a direct one we would rely on. SNT and private buses serve the main towns, but for Rinchenpong you would need to change at Gyalshing or Legship. A reserved car is much simpler, and the cost shared between two or three people is reasonable.
