Pre-dawn drive to Thambi for sunrise

Leave Zuluk in the dark and climb the hairpin loops to Thambi View Point for first light. On clear mornings the Kangchenjunga range turns pink to the west and the zigzag road appears below you as the sun comes up.

Your driver knocks at about 4:30 am. You climb into a cold SUV with a flask of tea from the homestay kitchen and set off up the loops in the dark, headlights swinging round one bend after another. Thambi View Point, at about 3,400 m, is only some 6 km above Zuluk, but the road takes 30–40 minutes because of the turns and frost.

At the top, stand at the railing facing west. On a clear morning between October and March the Kangchenjunga range catches the first light, and as the sun rises behind you the loops you drove up appear one by one in the valley below. Photographers want to be there 20 minutes before sunrise. Then many drivers continue a little higher to Lungthung for a wider view before heading back to Zuluk for breakfast or on to Nathang.

Bring your warmest layers: it is often below freezing at Thambi at dawn, even in October. The loops can be icy in winter, so trust your driver if he says it is not safe to go. Clouds hide the mountains more often from April to September. Indian nationals only, with the Silk Route permit. Check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

What time should we leave Zuluk for Thambi sunrise?

Leave about 45–60 minutes before sunrise. In winter that means around 5:00–5:15 am, in October and March closer to 4:45 am. The drive is short but slow because of the hairpins and frost. Your homestay will know the exact time; ask the night before and keep your camera batteries warm inside your jacket.

Is the road to Thambi safe in winter?

It is safe with an experienced local driver when the road is clear, but black ice and snow can make the loops dangerous between December and March. Drivers sometimes wait for the sun or turn back, and the army may close the road. Follow their advice, and check current status before you travel.

Will we definitely see Kangchenjunga from Thambi?

No one can promise it. Your best chances are from October to early March on mornings after a clear night. From April the haze grows, and from June to September cloud usually hides the range. Even without the peaks, the view of the zigzag road at sunrise is worth the early start.
