Trade-route history walk in Rongli
A short self-guided walk with a story: Rongli as the lower market on the Kalimpong to Jelep La trade road, using what Wikipedia and local people can tell you.
Photo: W. H. Allen and Co. · Public domain, Wikimedia Commons
Wikipedia's article on Jelep La describes the Kalimpong route to the pass as passing through Rongli, Rhenock and Pedong, and says wool and furs were traded along it. The Dzuluk article says trade continued until about 1959.
Walk the main street with that in mind. Ask older shopkeepers, politely and only if they are free, what they remember of the road before the highway. Do not push for stories; many will not have any, and some will not want to talk.
End at a tea stall. Look up the hill road at the start of NH 717B and think of mule trains starting the climb. This is a thinking walk, not a sightseeing one, so bring your imagination and a notebook.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Is there a museum in Rongli?
Not that we know of. The history is in the road, the bazaar and in books. Check current status before you travel. For a wider view, Gangtok has the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology.
What was traded on the old route?
Wikipedia's Jelep La article says wool and furs moved along the Kalimpong route in the twentieth century, with Kalimpong as the contact point. Other goods are mentioned in general histories. We do not claim a full list.
Can we hire a guide for history?
Not formally. Some drivers and homestay hosts know the road's stories. Ask politely. Treat what you hear as told locally unless it is in a book.
