Cardamom and kitchen garden walk
A slow walk through Lingtam's terraces where cardamom grows under shade beside maize, ginger and vegetables, with a host who explains each crop.

Large cardamom is a key cash crop of Sikkim and the farms around Lingtam grow it under alder trees. The capsules are picked in autumn and dried before sale. Wikipedia describes the plant and its uses in cooking.
Walk with your host or a guide along farm lanes. Ask before entering fields, photographing families or picking anything. Most families are happy to explain how they work if you show interest and respect.
The walk is gentle but steps can be slippery after rain. Wear shoes with grip, carry water and take your litter back. If you want to buy a small packet of cardamom, ask for the day's price.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
When is cardamom harvested?
Usually in autumn, around September to November, followed by drying. Visits in spring show the plants in green leaf. Dates vary, so ask your host. We cannot promise to show drying in progress.
Can children join the walk?
Yes. The paths are mostly gentle, but steps can be slippery. Keep children close, avoid wet days and carry water. A short walk of one hour suits young children.
Can we buy cardamom?
Yes, in small packets, at a price that changes with the market. Check that pods are dry and fragrant. Keep them sealed. Ask your host for the current rate and do not expect bargains.
