A night in upper Dzongu before Tholung
Sleep in a Lepcha homestay in upper Dzongu the night before the Tholung walk. You start fresh at first light, eat a proper dinner, and hear your hosts' own stories of the monastery and the Kamsel.

Tholung is too far for a day trip from Gangtok and a stretch even from Mangan. A night in upper Dzongu solves that. Families in the upper villages host guests in simple rooms with home-cooked meals, and many have walked to Tholung themselves for the Kamsel. Ask them what it means to them; it is a better introduction than any guidebook.
Dinner is usually rice, dal, vegetables and greens from the fields, sometimes with local chicken or pork, and breakfast can be packed for an early start. Your host can arrange a guide and, if needed, a local vehicle to the road-head. Pay directly and fairly; homestay income matters in upper Dzongu.
Bring a torch, a warm layer for the evening and cash. Mobile signal is weak or absent in many upper villages. Your Dzongu permit must cover the dates of your stay.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Where should I stay for Tholung Monastery?
Stay in a Lepcha homestay in upper Dzongu, as close to the road-head as roads allow. There are no hotels in the reserve. Rates are about ₹1,500–2,500 per person a night with meals. Your host can arrange a guide and vehicle. In Kamsel years, book well in advance.
Can I do Tholung as a day trip from Gangtok?
No, not realistically. The drive to upper Dzongu takes 4–5 hours and the walk several more each way. Plan at least two nights in Dzongu, with the walk on the middle day. A Mangan base is possible but adds driving to a long day.
Is there mobile signal in upper Dzongu?
Coverage is weak or absent in many upper villages and on the Tholung trail. Some homestays have a spot with a signal. Tell family you may be out of contact for a day or two, carry a printed copy of your permit, and agree a pickup time with your driver in advance.
