Walking the pilgrim trail to Tholung
Climb from the road-head in upper Dzongu through mixed forest to Tholung Monastery and back in a long, steady day. A real walk, not a stroll, rewarded with quiet forest, streams and one of Sikkim's most sacred monasteries.

The trail to Tholung starts where vehicles stop in upper Dzongu. That point has moved over the years as roads have been extended and then damaged by slides, so your guide will confirm it the evening before. From there the path climbs steadily through forest, with stone steps, roots and stream crossings on simple bridges. Expect several hours up and a little less down.
The forest is the reward on the way: tall oaks and magnolias, rhododendron and bamboo, moss on every branch, and birdsong in the mornings. It is humid even in autumn, and the last section to the monastery is steep. Take it slowly, drink water and eat on the way. At about 2,400 m the altitude is moderate, but the climbing makes it feel harder.
Walk with a local guide from Dzongu, which is both safer and the respectful way to approach a sacred site. Start at first light so you are back before dark. Outside the Kamsel the monastery may be locked; your guide can check whether a caretaker will be present.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
How long is the walk to Tholung Monastery?
It depends on where vehicles can reach in upper Dzongu at the time, which changes after monsoon damage. Most walkers should plan several hours up and a little less down, as a full day. Your guide will confirm the start point and timing. Ask us about current access before you go.
Is the Tholung trek difficult?
It is moderate to strenuous. The trail climbs steadily through forest with steep sections, steps and stream crossings, and it is often wet. Altitude is modest at about 2,400 m, but you need reasonable fitness and good shoes. It is not suitable for people with knee or heart problems.
Do I need a guide for Tholung?
Yes, we strongly recommend a local guide. The trail is not signposted, conditions change after monsoons, and Tholung is a sacred site where local guidance helps. A guide costs about ₹1,000–2,000 for the day, arranged through your homestay. Never walk alone in upper Dzongu.
