A halfway night on the way north
Break the long North Sikkim drive with a night in Mangan. It eases the climb to Lachung or Lachen, avoids a rush to the Toong check post and leaves time for Singhik and the Naga Waterfall. Useful for families, seniors and late arrivals.

Most North Sikkim trips go from Gangtok to Lachung or Lachen in one long day of 5–7 hours. That works for many people, but not for everyone. If you land at Bagdogra in the afternoon, are travelling with older parents, or simply hate long days in a jeep, a night in Mangan at about 1,000 m splits the journey and means you never race the 4:00 pm cut-off at Toong.
The next morning you can stop at Singhik for the Kangchenjunga view, at the Naga Waterfall before Toong, and at Chungthang where the rivers meet, and still reach Lachung or Lachen by early afternoon. Your registered agent must plan the permit dates around the extra night, so tell us at the booking stage. Check current status before you travel.
Mangan's hotels are simple. Hotel Tamarind is the larger option; smaller lodges in the bazaar cost less. The town has a hospital, pharmacies and banks, which gives some peace of mind on a first day north. Sleep early: North Sikkim mornings start early.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Is it worth staying a night in Mangan?
It is worth it if you arrive in Gangtok late, travel with seniors or young children over five, or want to visit Dzongu or Singhik. It turns one long drive into two shorter ones and removes the pressure of the Toong 4:00 pm cut-off. For a quick 2N/3D trip most people drive straight through.
Does a Mangan night count towards the North Sikkim minimum stay?
Operators require a minimum of two nights in the protected areas of North Sikkim, which means Lachung, Lachen and beyond. Mangan lies below the Toong check post, so a night here is usually extra rather than part of that minimum. Ask us how it affects your permit dates.
What is the weather like in Mangan?
Mangan is mild for most of the year. Winter days from December to February are cool and clear, around 8–18 °C, and nights get cold. Spring and autumn are pleasant. From June to September it is warm, humid and rainy, with landslides on the highway, so plan cautiously in the monsoon.
