The pre-dawn drive to Gurudongmar
Leave Lachen in the dark, watch dawn break over the Lachen valley, breakfast at Thangu and cross a Tibet-like plateau to reach the lake by mid-morning. Long and cold, and worth every early hour when done safely.

The day begins at 3:30 or 4 am with tea and a packed breakfast in Lachen. Vehicles leave in a loose convoy, climbing through forest in the dark. Dawn usually breaks around Thangu, about 30 km and 1.5 hours up, where most drivers stop for breakfast at a simple eatery.
Beyond Thangu the trees end and the road crosses a high, open plateau of moraine and grass, passing an army check post where permits are checked. The final stretch runs across bare country with snow peaks ahead, and the lake appears suddenly below. You stay 30 to 45 minutes, then return the same way, usually reaching Lachen around midday.
Dress for −10 °C with wind: thermals, a down jacket, gloves, cap and sunglasses. Keep water, snacks and any medicines within reach. Drivers set the pace and decide whether conditions are safe; if they say the road is closed by snow or army orders, there is no alternative that day.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
What time do we leave Lachen for Gurudongmar?
Usually between 4 and 5 am. The early start lets you reach the lake by about 8 or 9 am, before wind and cloud build, and return to Lachen by lunch. Drivers also need time to continue to Lachung or Gangtok the same day.
How long is the drive from Lachen to Gurudongmar?
About 67 km, taking 3 to 3.5 hours each way, including a breakfast stop at Thangu and the army check post. Snow, road works or convoys can add time. The whole outing takes 7 to 8 hours.
What if someone feels unwell on the way?
They should not go higher. Many families leave the unwell person with a companion at Thangu, at about 3,900 m, with tea and warmth, and collect them on the way back. If symptoms are severe, the whole vehicle should return to Lachen.
