A safe plan for 5,000 m
Gurudongmar is high enough to make healthy people ill. Our simple plan: two nights of acclimatisation, light meals, plenty of water, no alcohol, a short stay at the lake and a firm rule to turn back at warning signs.

Most visitors fly into Bagdogra at about 125 m and reach Gurudongmar within three or four days. That is a rapid climb to at least 5,150 m, and the body has little time to adjust. We build in a night in Gangtok (1,650 m) and a night in Lachen (2,750 m) as the minimum, and we never offer a same-day Gurudongmar trip from Gangtok.
The night before, drink 2 to 3 litres of water, eat a light dinner, skip alcohol and sleep early. On the day, eat something at Thangu, keep sipping water, and at the lake walk slowly and stay no more than 45 minutes. Mild headache and breathlessness are common; severe headache, vomiting, confusion or breathlessness at rest mean descend immediately.
Talk to your doctor before the trip, especially about heart, lung or blood pressure conditions and pregnancy, and about acetazolamide. Small oxygen cans sold in Gangtok can ease discomfort briefly but do not treat altitude sickness. Going down does.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Is Gurudongmar safe for senior citizens?
Many fit seniors visit safely, but the altitude is serious. Consult a doctor first, especially with heart, lung or blood pressure conditions. Follow the acclimatisation plan, keep the lake visit short and be ready to wait at Thangu if unwell.
Should we carry oxygen to Gurudongmar?
Small oxygen cans sold in Gangtok pharmacies, around ₹500–1,000, can give brief relief but do not treat altitude sickness and run out quickly. They are a comfort, not a safety plan. The real treatment for serious symptoms is to descend immediately.
Can we go to Gurudongmar on the first day?
No. You need at least a night in Gangtok and a night in Lachen before the lake. Operators do not run same-day trips from Gangtok, and permits are issued for packages with Lachen overnights. Rushing the climb is the main cause of altitude sickness.
