Pick the area before the hotel
Gangtok is a long town on a ridge, and the map lies about distance. A hotel 1 km from MG Marg as the crow flies can be a 25-minute climb, and a resort '6 km from town' can be 40 minutes away in evening traffic. So we always start with the area. If you want to walk to dinner and the taxi stands, stay close to MG Marg. If you want quiet and a garden, go to Paljor Stadium Road or the forest resorts and accept a car for every trip.
The table below is how we think about the town when we book rooms for guests. The prices are indicative ranges for a double room per night in 2026; they rise 20–40 percent in October, late December and May, and fall in the monsoon.
| Area | Walk to MG Marg | Feel | Indicative double per night |
|---|---|---|---|
| MG Marg and lanes behind | 0–5 min | Lively till about 9 pm | ₹1,500–8,000 |
| Tibet Road, PS Road, Namnang Road | 5–12 min | Central, calmer | ₹2,000–8,500 |
| Paljor Stadium Road, Cherry Banks | 5–15 min | Quiet, older hotels | ₹6,500–16,000 |
| Development Area, Sichey, Deorali | 15–30 min or taxi | Residential, good value | ₹1,500–8,000 |
| Tadong on NH10 | Taxi | Practical for early departures | ₹3,000–6,500 |
| Pangthang, Lower Samdur, Rumtek road | Taxi, 20–45 min | Forest, spa, very quiet | ₹4,000–30,000 |
Budget: ₹1,500–3,000 a night
Clean budget rooms are easy to find in the lanes behind MG Marg, on Tibet Road and in Development Area. Most have a private bathroom with a geyser, Wi-Fi of varying quality and a small restaurant or tie-up with one. What separates a good budget room from a bad one in Gangtok is heating, light and stairs: many cheap rooms face a wall, and many sit several floors below the road.
Hotel Mount Jopuno on PS Road, about 300 m from the centre, is a simple, central hotel with parking, which matters if you have a driver; we see it at about ₹2,500–4,500. Solo travellers and backpackers use Zostel Gangtok in Upper Sichey, near Tamang Gumpa, with dorm beds from about ₹500 and private rooms from about ₹1,800. Registered homestays on the outskirts, towards Ranka and the Rumtek road, cost about ₹1,200–2,500 per person with meals and suit slow travellers with a car.
Two more we like at the upper end of budget: Mintokling Guest House on Bhanu Path, a quiet, garden-fronted guest house about 10 minutes on foot from MG Marg, at about ₹2,500–4,000; and, for a night in the countryside, the village homestays of Martam, about an hour from town via Rumtek, at about ₹1,500–2,500 per person with meals.
- Ask whether a room heater is included from November to February
- Ask how many steps lead from the road to reception
- Ask for a room with a window, not one facing a wall
- Confirm the ₹50 Sikkim tourist fee is charged once and shown on the bill
Mid-range: ₹3,500–8,500 a night
This is where most of our value and comfort guests stay, and Gangtok has a good choice. The Chumbi Residency on Tibet Road is a comfortable, well-run hotel a short walk above MG Marg, at about ₹6,000–9,500. Hotel Tashi Delek opens straight onto MG Marg itself; ask for an upper rear-facing room to avoid street noise. Hotel Sonam Delek on Tibet Road is a small, family-run hotel that sells rooms with windows facing the Kanchenjunga range, at about ₹2,500–4,500.
Summit Namnang Courtyard and Spa, about 10 minutes' walk below MG Marg, adds a spa at a mid-range price. Lemon Tree Hotel Gangtok in Middle Sichey offers branded standards, a lift and a restaurant, which families with grandparents value more than character, at about ₹4,000–8,000. The Royal Plaza in Upper Syari has larger rooms on a quieter side of town. For a last night before an early drive to Bagdogra, the hotels at Tadong on NH10 save 20–30 minutes.
For character, Netuk House on Tibet Road is a family-run heritage house built in the late 1950s, with Sikkimese rooms and home cooking, at about ₹4,000–7,000. Hotel Tibet on Paljor Stadium Road is a dependable, lift-equipped choice for families, at about ₹3,500–6,000, and The Hidden Forest Retreat in Middle Sichey is a family guest house set in gardens around an orchid nursery, at about ₹4,000–6,500.
We turn this into a priced, day-by-day plan for your dates.
Upmarket and heritage: ₹6,500–16,000
The Elgin Nor-Khill on Paljor Stadium Road was built in the 1930s as the royal guest house of the Chogyals of Sikkim and is now a heritage hotel with gardens, a proper dining room and a spa. It suits older couples and anyone who likes a building with a past, at about ₹9,000–16,000. Denzong Regency at Cherry Banks, opposite Raj Bhawan, is a large four-star hotel with a spa and casino, bigger rooms and full facilities, at about ₹6,500–12,000.
Both are within a short taxi ride of MG Marg and quiet in the evening. Ask for a mountain-facing room in writing; the range is to the north-west, and only some rooms see it.
Forest resorts: ₹14,000–35,000
Two resorts define premium Gangtok. Mayfair Spa Resort and Casino at Lower Samdur sits in a large forest estate below the town, 20–30 minutes from MG Marg, with a spa and casino; we see rooms at about ₹14,000–30,000. Taj Guras Kutir Resort and Spa at Pangthang, opened by IHCL in 2023 in the forest above Gangtok, has a J Wellness Circle spa and several restaurants and describes Kanchenjunga views; expect about ₹18,000–35,000. Both suit honeymooners and travellers who plan to spend real time at the hotel.
For a quieter, greener stay at a mid-range price, Bamboo Retreat at Sajong, off the road to Rumtek, is set among trees and organic gardens at about ₹4,000–7,500. The trade-off with all three is the same: every visit to town is a car ride, and dinner on MG Marg means a driver waiting.
Where to stay by traveller
When guests ask us for one name, we ask them two questions back: how many nights, and who is travelling. These are our usual first suggestions, all real hotels operating as far as we know in 2026, with indicative prices for a double room per night. Rates change by season and booking channel, so treat them as a guide.
If you are adding North Sikkim, your Gangtok hotel does two extra jobs. It stores the bags you do not need up north, and it absorbs date changes if permits are held for weather. Choose one that keeps luggage for two or three nights at no charge, where the SUV can reach the door for a 9 am departure to Lachung.
- First visit, two or three nights: The Chumbi Residency or Hotel Tashi Delek, about ₹4,500–9,500
- Couple wanting a view in town: Hotel Sonam Delek, about ₹2,500–4,500
- Family on a budget with a driver: Hotel Mount Jopuno, about ₹2,500–4,500
- Family with grandparents: Lemon Tree Hotel Gangtok, about ₹4,000–8,000
- Heritage lovers: The Elgin Nor-Khill, about ₹9,000–16,000
- Honeymooners: Mayfair or Taj Guras Kutir, about ₹14,000–35,000
- Solo backpackers: Zostel Gangtok, from about ₹500 a bed
Views, stairs, heating and booking
Kanchenjunga is visible from Gangtok on clear mornings, mostly from October to April, and only from rooms facing north-west. Do not pay a large premium for a 'mountain view' in the monsoon, when the range is hidden for weeks. If your room faces the valley, Tashi View Point and Ganesh Tok are a short drive at dawn.
Access matters more than stars for families. Many Gangtok hotels are on steep lanes with stairs, limited parking and no lift, and taxis cannot drive on MG Marg. Heating matters from November to February, when nights fall to about 4–5 °C. And dates matter if you are going north: permits for Tsomgo and North Sikkim can be held for weather, which shifts your Gangtok nights, so a flexible rate is worth a little extra. Book 6–8 weeks ahead for October, Christmas and May; 1–2 weeks is enough in the monsoon and March. All prices here are indicative; check current rates before you travel. Tell us the dates and the kind of room you want, and we will check live availability rather than promising a room we have not confirmed.
