Tsomgo frozen, January to March
In winter Tsomgo usually freezes and the basin fills with snow. For many families from the plains it is their first proper snow. Go prepared for cold, closures and short days, and hire boots and coats at the stalls.

From around January to March, Tsomgo's surface usually freezes and the slopes around it are deep in snow. The road from Gangtok is cleared by the Border Roads Organisation, but heavy falls can close it for a day or more. On a clear winter morning, with the lake white and the sky deep blue, it is the most striking of all the seasons.
Temperatures at the lake fall well below freezing. Stalls rent gumboots, gloves and long coats for about ₹100–300, and these are worth having. Do not walk on the ice: it is not safe and is not permitted. The snow fields near the parking area are where families play.
Leave Gangtok early, as cars must return by mid-afternoon and the light fades fast. Nathu La often closes after snowfall in winter, while Tsomgo and Baba Mandir may still be open. Keep a spare day in your plan. Check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
When does Tsomgo Lake freeze?
Tsomgo usually freezes from around January to March, and snow can linger into April. The exact period depends on the winter. Heavy snowfall can close the road for a day or more, so keep a spare day in Gangtok. Check current status before you travel.
Can we walk on frozen Tsomgo Lake?
No. Walking on the ice is unsafe and not permitted; the ice thickness varies and people have fallen through at Himalayan lakes. Enjoy the snow fields near the parking area instead. Follow instructions from police and lake committee staff, who patrol the shore.
What should we wear to Tsomgo in winter?
Wear thermals, a fleece or sweater, a down or padded jacket, a warm hat, gloves and thick socks with waterproof shoes. Gumboots and long coats can be hired at the lake. Add sunglasses and sunscreen: snow glare at 3,753 m is strong even on cold days.
