The Singalila trek north from Uttarey

A remote, seldom-walked trek that the district administration lists from Uttarey over Chewabhanjang and north along the Singalila Ridge through Dhor, Sikkim Megu and Dafey Bhir to Gomathang, in high country south of Dzongri, for experienced trekkers only.

The Gyalshing district administration lists the Singalila trek as Uttarey, Chewabhanjang, Dhor (Wahong), Sikkim Megu, Dafey Bhir and Gomathang or Boktok, with the season given as mid-May to October. It follows the Singalila Ridge north along the Nepal border into high, open country, with lakes, yak pastures and views of the Kangchenjunga range.

This is a serious, remote trek: long days, few trails marked on the ground, camps far from roads and altitudes above 4,000 m. It needs a registered Sikkim trekking agency, a guide who has walked it, full camping support and the forest and other permits that apply to the border area. Rules here change and some sections may be restricted, so check current status before you travel.

We plan it only for experienced trekkers with time to acclimatise. For a first Himalayan trek, the Dzongri trail from Yuksom is better supported.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

What is the Singalila trek from Uttarey?

A remote trek listed by the Gyalshing district administration that climbs from Uttarey to Chewabhanjang and follows the Singalila Ridge north through Dhor, Sikkim Megu and Dafey Bhir to Gomathang. It runs along the Nepal border into high country south of Dzongri and is one of the least walked routes in Sikkim.

Do I need permits for the Singalila trek?

Yes. Expect forest department permits and registration through a registered Sikkim trekking agency, and checks near the border. Foreign nationals face extra restrictions in border areas and should ask us before planning. Rules for this route change and some sections may be closed, so check current status before you travel.

Is the Singalila trek suitable for beginners?

No. It is remote, high and lightly used, with long days, changeable weather and camps above 4,000 m. It suits experienced trekkers with full camping support and a guide who knows the route. Beginners should start with the Dzongri trek from Yuksom, which is better supported and has a clear trail.
