Leave Upper Pelling after breakfast and walk about 2 km down the road to Pemayangtse, 25–30 minutes. Spend 45 minutes in the monastery, including the Zangdok Palri model on the top floor.
From Pemayangtse walk to the ornamental gate on the Pelling–Gyalshing road and take the forest path to Rabdentse, 15–20 minutes. Explore the ruins and rest on the terrace that faces Kangchenjunga.
Return the same way. The climb back to Upper Pelling is steady; if your legs are tired, flag down a shared taxi on the road or ask your hotel to send a car from the gate. Carry water, a light jacket and rain gear outside the dry season.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
How long is the Pelling–Pemayangtse–Rabdentse walk?
About 6–7 km in total on road and forest path, taking 3 hours with visits. The descent to Pemayangtse is easy; the walk back up to Upper Pelling is the hardest part. You can shorten it by taking a taxi back from the Rabdentse gate.
Is it safe to walk the Pelling roads?
Generally yes. Walk on the valley side facing traffic, wear something visible, and take care on bends. The forest path to Rabdentse is car-free. Avoid walking after dark, when unlit stretches and fast jeeps make it unsafe.
What should I carry for the walk?
Water, a light jacket, sun protection, small cash for entry and offerings, and comfortable shoes with grip. Outside October to March carry a rain jacket. From May to September add insect repellent and check for leeches after the forest path.
