Light and shade at the Norbugang Chorten
Spend a slow hour photographing or sketching the throne, chorten and prayer flags of Norbugang in late afternoon light, when the park is usually empty.

Norbugang is a small, shaded site, and most day visitors stay ten minutes. In late afternoon, after the Pelling day tours have left, the light slants through the trees onto the whitewashed chorten and the grey stone of the throne, and prayer flags glow against the sky.
Bring a sketchbook or a camera with a wide lens for the throne under its tree and a short telephoto for details of the chorten and flags. Respect the site: no climbing on the throne, no tripods on monuments, and no drones.
From October to March, clear evenings bring warm light; in spring, haze softens it. Walk back via Kathok Lake for reflections before dark.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Is photography allowed at Norbugang?
Outdoor photography is generally fine at Norbugang. Do not climb on the throne or chorten for a better angle, do not place tripods on the monuments and ask before photographing people or inside the temple. Drones need official permission.
When is the best light at Norbugang?
Late afternoon, roughly 1–2 hours before sunset, when light filters through the trees onto the chorten and throne and the site is quiet. October to March gives the clearest evenings. Early morning is also quiet but shadier.
How long should I spend at Norbugang?
Thirty to 45 minutes is enough for most visitors. Photographers, sketchers and history readers may want an hour or more. Combine with Kathok Lake and a walk through the village fields for a relaxed late afternoon.
