Ridge and forest walk above the villages

Climb from Hee Bermiok's upper villages through oak and rhododendron forest to the ridges above for valley views and, on clear mornings, the Kangchenjunga range, with a village guide and an eye out for birds.

Above the upper villages, paths climb through mixed forest of oak, chestnut and rhododendron to open ridges. With a village guide, an easy walk of three to four hours takes you up for views over the valleys towards Pelling and Dentam and, on clear mornings between October and March, north to the Kangchenjunga range.

Start early, when the air is clearest and the forest is full of birds: barbets, minivets, laughingthrushes and sunbirds are common. In March and April the rhododendrons flower along the higher paths.

The route is chosen on the day by your guide according to weather and the state of the paths. Carry water, a snack, a warm layer and a rain jacket, and wear shoes with good grip. Return for lunch at your homestay and a slow afternoon.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

Can I see Kangchenjunga from Hee Bermiok?

Yes, on clear mornings, mostly from October to March, from the upper villages and the ridges above. The view is across forested ridges at a lower angle than from Pelling. Cloud usually builds by mid-morning, so be outside at first light. In the monsoon the range is rarely visible.

Do I need a guide for walks in Hee Bermiok?

For short walks around your homestay, no. For the forest and ridge paths, yes: trails branch often, cross private land and can be confusing in cloud. A village guide costs indicatively ₹800–1,500 for a few hours, knows the birds and plants, and keeps the money in the village.

What should I pack for walks in Hee Bermiok?

Shoes with good grip, a warm layer, a rain jacket, a hat, sunscreen, water and snacks. Binoculars are worth bringing for birds. From June to September add leech socks or salt, and from December to February add gloves and thermals for the early starts.
