Farm walk on the Dentam valley floor
Walk the footpaths between houses and terraces around Dentam bazaar with a local guide or homestay host, seeing how a West Sikkim farming valley grows maize, paddy, vegetables and cardamom and keeps its dairy cows.
Dentam is one of the broadest farming valleys in Gyalshing district, and its footpaths are the easiest way to understand how most people in West Sikkim actually live. A local guide, or the host of your homestay, can lead you down from the bazaar through terraces and past houses to the stream and back, in about two to three hours at an easy pace.
What you see depends on the season. In October and November families harvest maize and paddy and dry them on rooftops and courtyards. In winter the terraces carry mustard, radish and other vegetables. In spring the cardamom plants under the shade trees put out flowers near the ground. Cows are kept close to the houses, and milk is sold in the bazaar.
Keep to the paths along terrace edges, close any gates you open and ask before photographing people or homes. If a family invites you in for tea, accept if you have time; a small purchase of vegetables or milk is a kind way to say thank you.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Do I need a guide for a farm walk in Dentam?
Not strictly, as the footpaths are public, but a local guide or your homestay host makes the walk far richer. They know which paths cross private land, can explain the crops and the farming year, and can introduce you to families. Indicatively a guide costs ₹800–1,500 for two to three hours.
What crops are grown around Dentam?
Maize and paddy are the main summer and autumn crops, with vegetables, mustard and radish in winter and black cardamom grown under shade trees on the slopes. Many families also keep cows and sell milk. What you see on a walk depends on the month; October and November are the harvest season.
Is the Dentam farm walk suitable for children and older travellers?
Yes, if you choose the route with your guide. The valley floor is gentle, but paths between terraces can be narrow, steep in places and slippery after rain. Wear shoes with grip and carry water. Older travellers can keep to the flatter paths near the bazaar.
