Early morning birding around Dentam
Walk the edges of fields, river and forest around Dentam at dawn, when the valley is quiet and the birds are most active, with a local guide who knows the common species, the best paths and where the flocks feed.

The Gyalshing district administration describes Dentam as an ideal spot for bird watchers and nature lovers. The reason is the mix of habitats in a small area: open fields on the valley floor, a river with scrub along its banks and forest on the slopes, with rhododendrons on the higher ridges.
Start at first light, when it is cool and birds call most. Along the field edges look for bulbuls, drongos, barbets and sunbirds; in the forest, flocks of minivets and laughingthrushes move through the canopy. In spring many birds are in breeding colours, and the call of the barbets carries across the whole valley.
Carry binoculars, a field guide or app, water and a light jacket, as mornings are cool even in spring. Walk slowly and quietly, keep to paths and do not use recordings to call birds. Finish with tea in the bazaar as the first jeeps leave for Gyalshing.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Is Dentam good for birdwatching?
Yes. The district administration names Dentam as an ideal spot for birdwatchers, and the mix of fields, river and forest supports a good range of common Himalayan foothill species. It is not a formal reserve, so expect pleasant general birding rather than rarities. Mornings in March to May and October to November are best.
What birds might I see in Dentam?
Commonly seen birds of these elevations include bulbuls, drongos, barbets, sunbirds, minivets, laughingthrushes and various flycatchers and warblers in season. A local guide or a field guide to the birds of the Indian subcontinent will help with identification. Sightings vary with season, weather and luck.
Can I combine Dentam birding with Uttarey?
Yes, and it is a good plan. Uttarey, at about 2,000 m, has more forest and different species from the lower Dentam valley. Bird Dentam at dawn, drive across the Singshore Bridge and spend the next morning on the forest trails around Uttarey. A night in a Uttarey homestay makes this easy.
