Rolep lies upstream of Rongli where the Rangpo river runs down from the high country towards Rorathang and the Teesta. A few families here have opened homestays with rooms looking over the river valley, and they cook what the village grows: rice, maize, squash, greens and local chicken.
Rolep is a place for doing very little: walks along the river, birding in the morning, long meals. It works well before or after the high Silk Route, or as a quiet pair of nights on its own from Gangtok. Roads beyond Rongli can be cut by slides in the monsoon. Ask us whether a permit is needed for your route that season, and check current status before you travel.
Why we book it

Questions travellers ask
Questions about Rolep riverside homestays
Where is Rolep and how do we get there?
Rolep is a village on the upper Rangpo river in the Rongli subdivision of Pakyong district, roughly 20 km beyond Rongli bazaar. Most guests come by private car from Gangtok (about 3.5–4 hours) or from Siliguri via Rhenock and Rongli. Shared jeeps run as far as Rongli; from there you need a local taxi, which your homestay can arrange.
Is Rolep good in the monsoon?
It is green and very quiet, but the road beyond Rongli can be blocked by landslides between June and September, and the river runs high and fast. If you come in the rains, keep a spare day and never go down to the water's edge. October to May is the safer and drier window. Check current status before you travel.
What is there to do at Rolep?
Walk the village lanes and the river path, watch birds along the forest edge in the morning, help in the kitchen, and rest. There are no sights to tick off, which is the point. Rolep pairs well with a day trip to Aritar's lake or a night up at Zuluk, and your hosts can suggest longer walks to neighbouring villages.
