A short walk to Neya Khola falls

An easy outing from your homestay to Neya Khola, a forest stream and waterfall near the village listed among Yangang's natural sights. Best just after the monsoon, when the water is high and the forest green, and a good first walk on arrival.

Neya Khola, khola meaning stream in Nepali, drops through forest close to the village and appears in the Wikipedia article on Yangang among its local sights. It is not a famous roadside waterfall with stalls and parking, and that is the appeal: a quiet walk through fields and trees to moving water.

Your host or a neighbour can lead the way. The path passes farms of maize, ginger and cardamom before entering forest. Expect birdsong, butterflies after the monsoon and a cool, damp spot at the falls where you can sit for a while. Water levels depend on recent rain.

Go in September to November for the best flow and clear paths. In the monsoon the stream can be dangerous and leeches are common, and by late spring the falls may be thin. Wear shoes with grip, keep away from slippery rocks at the edge and do not swim in pools after rain.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

How far is Neya Khola falls from Yangang?

It lies close to the village and is usually reached in under an hour on foot from most homestays, depending on where you stay. Allow about two hours for the round trip with time at the falls. Ask your host to walk you there or to point out the start.

When is Neya Khola falls best?

Just after the monsoon, from September to November, when the stream is full and the paths have dried enough to walk safely. During heavy monsoon rain the stream can be dangerous. By April and May the flow is usually much lower, though the forest walk is still pleasant.

Is the walk to Neya Khola safe for children?

Yes, for children used to walking, with an adult close by. The path is mostly gentle, but rocks near the falls are slippery and the water can be strong after rain. Keep children back from the edge and do not let them climb on wet rocks.
