Guided day hike towards Bhaleydhunga
A long, steep day walk with a local guide from Yangang up through the forests of the Maenam ridge towards Bhaleydhunga, the rooster-shaped rock that looms over the village. For fit walkers only, in dry weather, with an early start and a firm turnaround time.

Bhaleydhunga, Nepali for rooster rock, is the beak-like outcrop on the Maenam ridge visible from much of South Sikkim. Reaching it on foot is a serious day: a climb of well over a thousand metres from Yangang through farmland, then oak, rhododendron and bamboo forest within or beside Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary.
The trail is not signposted and branches often, which is why a local guide is essential. Cloud can close in by late morning and paths are muddy and steep. Your guide will set a pace and a turnaround time; please respect it even if the rock seems close. Views back over the Teesta side of Sikkim reward you well before the top.
Start before dawn with a packed breakfast and lunch, at least 2 litres of water, rain gear and a warm layer. Forest department rules apply inside the sanctuary and may include fees or guide requirements; proposed ropeway and skywalk projects may also change access. Check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
How difficult is the Bhaleydhunga hike?
Difficult. It is a long, steep, unmarked forest walk with a large height gain and a full day out, usually 8 to 10 hours. You should be a fit, experienced hill walker with good shoes. It is not suitable for children, seniors or anyone with knee or heart problems. Always go with a local guide.
Is there a ropeway to Bhaleydhunga?
A ropeway and a skywalk at Bhaleydhunga have been proposed, and the Wikipedia article on Yangang mentions them as planned projects. At the time of writing we cannot confirm that either is open to visitors. Plans like these change, so check current status before you travel and ask us.
What is the best season for Bhaleydhunga?
October and November give the most settled weather and clearest views, with March and April a good second for rhododendron in the forest. Avoid the monsoon, from June to September, when trails are slippery and leech-ridden, and deep winter, when the upper ridge is cold and can see snow.
