Damthang to Tendong summit and back
The classic half-day forest walk: about 5–6 km up from Damthang through oak, rhododendron and bamboo to the summit watchtower at about 2,600 m, with Kangchenjunga ahead on clear mornings. Moderate effort, well-trodden path, home by lunch.
The trail starts from the road at Damthang, around 2,030 m, and climbs steadily through village fields into forest. The path is clear and mostly made of earth and stone, with some steep sections. Stop often: the views open in glimpses through the trees, and the forest is full of birdsong in the early morning.
Higher up, oaks give way to rhododendron and bamboo, and in March and April the reds and pinks of rhododendron flowers line the trail. Near the top the ground levels out to a broad summit with a small shrine and a watchtower. On a clear day the panorama runs from Kangchenjunga to the Darjeeling hills.
Allow 2.5–3 hours up and 1.5–2 down. A local guide is not compulsory but helps with route-finding where side paths branch, and with birds and plants. Carry water, a snack and a rain jacket. In the monsoon the trail is slippery and leech-filled; we do not recommend it from June to August.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
How difficult is the Tendong Hill trek?
Moderate. You walk about 5–6 km one way and gain roughly 570 m on a clear forest path with some steep stretches. Anyone who can climb stairs for an hour with rests will manage. Children over about 8 who walk regularly usually enjoy it. Allow 5–6 hours return.
Do we need a guide for Tendong?
Not strictly, as the main trail is well used. But side paths can confuse, and a guide from Damthang or Ravangla adds bird and plant knowledge and the Lepcha story. Expect about ₹1,000–1,500 for a half day. We recommend a guide for first-timers and families.
Is there water on the Tendong trail?
Do not rely on it. There are no shops above Damthang, and streams are seasonal. Carry at least 1–1.5 litres per person, plus snacks or a packed lunch. Carry a refillable bottle and take all wrappers back down.
