Kangchenjunga from the Guru's terrace
Be at Samdruptse as the gate opens on a clear winter morning, when Kangchenjunga and its neighbours stand sharp to the north-west and Namchi is still in shade. The most reliable mountain view in South Sikkim within a short drive.

Kangchenjunga, 8,586 m, is the third-highest mountain on Earth and, for Sikkimese Buddhists and Lepchas alike, a guardian deity. From Samdruptse it rises above the ridges to the north-west with Kabru to its left and Pandim nearer, a long white wall that turns from pink to white as the sun climbs.
The clearest season is October to February. Check the sky the evening before: a cold, starry night usually means a clean morning. Leave Namchi with a taxi 20–30 minutes before the site opens, and be on the terrace by the first hour. By 10 am, haze and valley cloud often rise.
Bring a flask of tea or buy one at the stalls near the car park, and dress for 2–6 °C on winter mornings. A short zoom brings out the peaks, but the scale is best seen with the gilded statue in the foreground. Keep tripods out of the main walking line.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
What time does Samdruptse open?
The site has generally opened in the morning, around 8 am, and closed in the late afternoon. Opening hours can change, so check with your hotel the evening before. Even before the gate opens, the road below gives partial views of the mountains.
How cold is Samdruptse in winter?
December and January mornings at the top are around 2–6 °C, colder in wind. Namchi below is a few degrees warmer. Bring a down jacket or fleece, a hat and gloves for an early visit. Days warm up to about 12–15 °C by noon in sunshine.
Which month gives the best mountain view?
November and December are the most reliable: dry, cold air and few clouds. October is often clear after the monsoon ends. January and February are good but can bring passing cloud and occasional snow on the hilltop. By April haze is common.
