Butterflies on Kitam's forest tracks
A late-morning walk through Kitam's sal forest after the monsoon, when sunny days bring butterflies to the tracks, damp patches and flowering shrubs. A good second outing after dawn birding, or a gentle option for families.

Sikkim is rich in butterflies, and the warm, low forests of the Rangeet valley hold many species that never reach higher hill towns. At Kitam, October and early November are the best time: the monsoon has passed, the forest is still green and flowering, and sunny mornings warm the tracks.
Walk slowly and look at damp ground, where butterflies gather to take up minerals, and at sunlit flowering shrubs along the forest edge. Swallowtails, nymphalids and small blues are typical. A guide who knows butterflies is harder to find than a bird guide, so a good field guide or an app helps.
This walk starts later than birding, once the sun is up and the air warm. Wear light clothes, a hat and closed shoes, and carry water. Do not catch or handle butterflies. Forest rules apply inside the sanctuary, and fees or guide requirements may change; check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
When is the best time for butterflies at Kitam?
October and early November, on sunny days after the monsoon, are usually best. Activity peaks from late morning to early afternoon, when the air is warm. Spring, from March to April, is a good second season. On cloudy or rainy days butterflies stay hidden.
Is the butterfly walk suitable for children?
Yes. It starts later in the day, keeps to forest tracks and moves slowly, which suits children well. Keep them on the paths, bring water and snacks, and explain beforehand that butterflies are watched and photographed, never caught or handled.
What camera do we need for butterflies?
A phone works for butterflies on flowers if you approach slowly. A macro lens or a zoom with close focus gives better results. Move gently, avoid casting your shadow over the butterfly and be patient. Early warm mornings, when they bask, are easiest.
