Dawn birding walk for Kitam's peafowl

An early walk on the forest tracks of Kitam with a local guide, listening for peafowl and junglefowl at first light and working the sal canopy for minivets, magpies and woodpeckers. The best few hours of birding the sanctuary offers.

Leave Namchi in the dark and arrive as the sky lightens. The first sound is often the loud, two-note call of the Indian peafowl from its roost in the tall trees. Peafowl, red junglefowl and kalij pheasant feed along the forest edges early, then slip into cover as the sun climbs.

Walk the tracks slowly with your guide. In the canopy look for scarlet minivets, common green magpies, Himalayan flamebacks and flocks of oriental white-eyes, all listed for the sanctuary on Wikipedia. Barking deer and Assamese macaques are sometimes seen, wild boar more rarely. Binoculars matter more than a long lens here.

By about 9:30 am the forest warms up and activity drops. Head back to Namchi for breakfast or drive on towards Melli. Carry water, wear muted colours and closed shoes, and follow forest department rules. Entry fees and guide requirements may apply; check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

Will we definitely see peafowl at Kitam?

No sighting is guaranteed, but Kitam is the best place in Sikkim for wild Indian peafowl. You will very likely hear them at dawn from November to April. Seeing them depends on luck, quiet and an early start. A local guide who knows their roosting and feeding spots greatly improves your chances.

What time should we reach Kitam?

At sunrise, which is around 6:00 am in winter and about 5:15 am by April. Leave Namchi roughly 45 minutes before. The first two to three hours are by far the most productive. By mid-morning the forest heats up and the birds go quiet.

Do we need a guide at Kitam?

It is strongly recommended and may be required by forest rules. A local guide knows the calls, the tracks and where peafowl feed, and helps you stay on permitted paths. Expect about ₹1,000–2,000 per group for a morning, indicative. Ask us or your Namchi hotel a day ahead.
