A day at Jorethang's Maghe Sankranti mela

Join thousands of families on the Rangeet riverbank for Jorethang's Maghe Sankranti fair, held since 1961: a morning dip for the devout, then stalls, rides, folk music and festival food. The busiest and most cheerful day in South Sikkim's winter calendar.

Maghe Sankranti falls on the first of Magh in the Nepali calendar, about 14 January. In the early morning, devout families bathe in the Rangeet, then the day turns to celebration. Wikipedia records that the Jorethang mela dates from 1961 and is one of the main festivals of Sikkim's Nepali community.

Walk the stalls for farm tools, bamboo baskets, clothes, handicrafts and household goods, and eat the season's food: sesame and molasses sweets, sel roti, boiled yam and sweet potato. Cultural programmes, music and amusement rides run through the fair days, and the crowd draws families from across South and West Sikkim and the Darjeeling hills.

Arrive by mid-morning for the best atmosphere, and keep valuables close in the crowds. Traffic slows on all roads into town, so allow extra time and consider staying in Namchi. The fair programme and dates are set by the organisers each year; check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

When is the Jorethang Maghe Mela?

It begins on Maghe Sankranti, the first day of Magh in the Nepali calendar, which usually falls on 14 or 15 January, and runs as a fair for several days. The organisers announce the exact dates and programme each year. Check current status before you travel and book rooms early.

What happens at the Maghe Sankranti mela?

Devotees take a ritual bath in the Rangeet in the morning. Then the riverbank becomes a fair, with stalls selling food, crafts and household goods, cultural programmes, music and amusement rides. Seasonal foods include sesame sweets, yam, sweet potato and sel roti. Families come from across the region.

Is the mela suitable for families with children?

Yes, children usually love the rides, food and music. Crowds can be heavy at peak times, so agree a meeting point, keep small children close and carry water and snacks. January days at Jorethang's low altitude are mild, around 18–22 °C, with cool mornings.
