Pilgrim's vegetarian lunch after the yatra
After the morning round at Siddhesvara Dham, eat a simple vegetarian thali at the canteens near the gate or in Namchi town: rice, dal, seasonal sabzi, pickle and curd. Cheap, filling and a taste of the plains-meets-hills food that the pilgrims brought.

Char Dham draws pilgrims from Bihar, Bengal, Assam and beyond, and the food around it has followed: pure-vegetarian canteens near the complex and in Namchi serve rice, roti, dal, a seasonal vegetable, pickle, papad and sometimes kheer. A full thali costs about ₹150–300 and refills of rice and dal are usually included.
In the hills the sabzi changes with the season: squash and its shoots in summer, mustard greens and radish in winter, local beans in autumn. Some places add a Sikkimese touch with a side of gundruk, fermented leafy greens, or a small bowl of dalle chilli pickle. Ask for it if you like heat.
Eat early, from noon, before the coaches arrive. Most canteens take UPI and cash. If you prefer to sit longer, drive back to Namchi's Central Park, where several vegetarian restaurants serve thalis, dosas and North Indian dishes in a quieter setting.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Is food at Char Dham pure vegetarian?
The canteens and stalls inside and next to the complex are vegetarian, in keeping with the pilgrimage. Onion and garlic may be used in some dishes; ask if you follow a satvik diet. Namchi town has both vegetarian and non-vegetarian restaurants.
What is gundruk?
Gundruk is fermented and dried leafy greens, usually mustard, radish or cauliflower leaves, made across Nepali-speaking communities in Sikkim. It has a sour, earthy taste and is cooked into soups or pickles. It is often served with rice in winter.
Can we get Jain food near Char Dham?
Strict Jain food (no root vegetables) is not standard, but some vegetarian restaurants in Namchi will prepare it if you ask in advance. Tell us when you book and we will call ahead. Carry some dry snacks in case options are limited on the road.
