Evening aarti on Solophok hill
Stay on at Char Dham for the evening lamp ceremony, when bells ring across the hilltop and the Shiva statue is lit against the dusk. A quieter, more local experience than the midday crowds, best combined with sunset over the Darjeeling ridge.

Aarti, the offering of lamps, is performed at the shrines around dusk. Priests circle flames before the deities while bells and conch shells sound, and local families who live near Solophok come up for darshan after work. It is short, about 20–30 minutes, and free to watch.
Arrive an hour before sunset to walk the grounds as the light turns gold, then find a place near the main shrine. On clear evenings the sun sets over the Darjeeling hills to the south-west and the statue is lit soon after. Timings move with the season, so ask at the gate in the morning or call your hotel.
Book your taxi for the return trip in advance, as few cars wait at the top after dark. Bring a warm layer: the hilltop is breezy and evenings cool quickly, even in April. Closing time is usually around 6 pm, so confirm that aarti falls within opening hours on your date.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
What time is aarti at Char Dham?
Evening aarti is held around dusk, which ranges from about 5 pm in winter to 6:30 pm in summer. Timings change and depend on the complex's opening hours, which have been roughly 8 am to 6 pm. Ask at the gate or check with your hotel the same day.
Is there transport back to Namchi in the evening?
Not reliably. Few taxis wait at the top after dark, so ask your driver to wait or come back at a fixed time. A return trip from Namchi with an hour's wait costs about ₹300–500. Shared jeeps pass on the main road below but the walk down is steep.
Can we photograph the aarti?
Photography of the outside of the complex and the lit statue is generally fine. During the ritual, avoid flash and do not stand in front of priests or worshippers. Inside sanctums, ask first. A phone in night mode does a good job of the statue after dark.
