Dawn drive from Okhrey and the Barsey walk
The day most people come to Okhrey for: a dawn taxi 8 km up to Hilley, the 4–5 km forest walk to the Barsey ridge with Kangchenjunga ahead on clear mornings, and back to Okhrey for a late lunch. We cover timing, costs and what to carry.

Ask your homestay the evening before to book a taxi for about 5:30–6 am. The 8 km road to Hilley takes 30–40 minutes and costs about ₹600–800 one way. At the Hilley checkpost, pay the sanctuary entry, about ₹50 for Indians and ₹100 for foreigners per day plus a small camera fee in recent seasons. Then start up the broad trail through rhododendron, oak and magnolia forest.
The walk to the Barsey ridge at about 3,000 m is 4–5 km and takes most people 1.5–2 hours. From March to May the rhododendrons flower; from October to December the sky is usually clearest, and Kangchenjunga stands over the forest from Guras Kunj. Rest, take photographs and have tea at the lodge if it is serving. The descent to Hilley takes about 1–1.5 hours.
Either take your taxi back to Okhrey or walk the 8 km down the road in 2.5–3 hours. Carry water, snacks, a rain jacket and a warm layer, and go slowly at altitude. Children who walk regularly manage well. From June to September the trail is wet and leechy and the view rarely clears, so we do not recommend it then.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
How early should we leave Okhrey for Barsey?
Leave by about 5:30–6 am to start walking from Hilley by 6:30–7 am. That puts you on the ridge by about 8:30–9 am, before late-morning cloud. In spring, cloud can rise even earlier, so the earlier the better.
How much does the Okhrey–Hilley taxi cost?
About ₹600–800 one way for a small car, or ₹1,200–1,600 for a return with waiting time, in 2026. Your homestay can book it. Shared jeeps are irregular on this stretch, so a reserved taxi is the reliable option.
Can we see Kangchenjunga from Barsey?
Yes, on clear mornings, from the Guras Kunj clearing on the ridge. October to December gives the best chance. In spring the view is often hazy or cloudy by mid-morning, so arrive early. From June to September it is rarely visible.
