Tea, momos and the Tuesday-named bazaar
Stop in Mangalbarey's bazaar for tea, momos or a thali and a look at a subdivision town at work. The name means Tuesday in Nepali, and as told locally it recalls an old weekly market day. Cheap, quick and genuinely local.
Mangalbarey serves the villages of eastern Soreng district, and its bazaar is busiest in the morning, when jeeps load for Jorethang, shops open and farmers bring in vegetables and seasonal fruit. Small eateries serve tea, momos, chowmein, puri with potato curry and rice-dal thalis for about ₹100–250. It is a good place to break the climb from Jorethang to the Rinchenpong ridge.
The town's name comes from Mangalbar, the Nepali word for Tuesday, just as Sombaria in the west comes from Sombar, Monday. As told locally, both recall weekly market days, when villagers walked in to trade. Whether a Tuesday market still runs on the old pattern varies, so ask; either way the bazaar trades every day now. From November to January look for oranges from the farms around town.
Use the stop to draw cash, since Wikipedia lists a State Bank of Sikkim branch at Mangalbaria and the ridge villages above have few machines. Ask before photographing people or stalls, carry small notes, and do not expect English menus; pointing works well. This is a pause, not a destination, and it is worth it.
