The back road from Mangalbarey to Rinchenpong

Drive about 19 km up from Mangalbarey to the Rinchenpong ridge on a quieter road than the main Jorethang route, through farm villages with views opening north as you climb. Stop for photographs, oranges in season and a first look at the Kangchenjunga range.

Most cars climb from Jorethang to Rinchenpong and Kaluk on the main road. From Mangalbarey, a road of about 19 km climbs to the same ridge through farm villages, a useful alternative if you are already in the east of the district or want a quieter drive. It takes about 45 minutes to an hour by car, longer with stops, rising from about 1,200 m to about 1,650 m at Rinchenpong.

The appeal is the slow change of view. Farms of maize, vegetables and orange trees give way to forest on the upper slopes, and on clear mornings from October to April the Kangchenjunga range appears to the north-west as you near the ridge. Stop where it is safe to pull over, buy oranges from roadside farmers in winter, and keep an eye out for birds along the forest stretches.

A small car one way costs about ₹1,200–1,800. Road condition on smaller roads in Sikkim varies after rain, so ask your driver or locals in Mangalbarey before setting off, especially from June to September, and allow extra time. Carry water and motion-sickness tablets if you need them; the road has many bends.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

How far is Rinchenpong from Mangalbarey?

About 19 km by road, usually 45 minutes to an hour by car. Kaluk is about 21 km. A small car costs about ₹1,200–1,800 one way. Shared jeeps run less often on this road than on the main Jorethang route, so ask at the Mangalbarey stand.

Is the Mangalbarey to Rinchenpong road in good condition?

It is a narrow hill road whose condition changes with the season. After heavy rain, slides and potholes can slow it down. Ask locally or ask us before setting off, especially in the monsoon, and allow extra time. Check current status before you travel.

Can I see Kangchenjunga on the way to Rinchenpong?

Often, on clear mornings from October to April, as you approach the ridge. The best views are from Rinchenpong and Kaluk themselves. By late morning cloud often builds, so drive up early if mountain views matter to you.
