How to make the trip
Shared jeep
≈ 1–1.25 h · ≈ ₹80–120 a seat
Shared jeeps to Rumtek leave from a stand in central Gangtok through the morning and return in the afternoon. Your hotel will know the current stand. Timings change and the last return can be early, so confirm it with the driver. It is the cheapest way, best for solo travellers with flexible plans.
Reserved small car
≈ 1 h · ≈ ₹1,500–2,500 return; ≈ ₹2,500–3,500 with Ranka and Lingdum
A reserved car from Gangtok waits while you visit the main hall, the Golden Stupa and Old Rumtek. Adding Lingdum near Ranka and Banjhakri Falls makes a half day of 4–5 hours. Agree the stops and waiting time before you set off. Expect about ₹10–20 for monastery entry and carry photo ID.
Fares are indicative. Landslides, snow and check-post timings change journeys: check current status before you travel.

Yes. Lingdum Monastery near Ranka, Banjhakri Falls and Saramsa Garden at Ranipool are on or near the way, making a half day of 4–5 hours by reserved car for about ₹2,500–3,500. Martam village, beyond Rumtek, is ideal for a homestay night or lunch.
When is the best time to visit Rumtek?
October to May, in the morning before 10 am or around 3 pm, when monks are often at prayer. June brings the Tse-chu mask dances at Old Rumtek. The monsoon, from June to September, slows the road but rarely closes it. Check current status before you travel.
