Rhododendron roadside walk
An easy stroll along the Silk Route road and nearby forest lanes in spring, when rhododendron and magnolia flower above the village. Timing varies year to year.

Rhododendrons grow across the Sikkim hills, and the belt above 2,000 m near Padamchen flowers in spring. Peak weeks change with altitude and weather, so we never promise a date. Late March to May is the usual window; ask your host what is in bloom.
Walk the road in the morning, when traffic is light and the light is soft. Stay on the verge, listen for vehicles on bends and do not pick flowers or branches. The forest is part of a protected sanctuary.
Carry a rain jacket, because afternoon cloud and showers are common in spring. Mist can hide the view, but it also brings out colour. Combine the walk with tea at a roadside stall.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
When do the rhododendrons bloom?
Usually from late March through May around 2,000–3,000 m, with the exact timing shifting with the weather and the species. Padamchen is on the lower side of the belt, so earlier than Zuluk. Ask your homestay what is in bloom when you travel.
Is it safe to walk on the road?
It is a narrow hill road with army and tourist vehicles. Walk on the inner side, avoid blind bends and keep children close. Early morning is quietest. Do not walk after dark.
Can we pick rhododendron flowers?
No. The forest is inside a protected wildlife sanctuary, and picking flowers or branches is not allowed and not respectful. Take photographs and leave the plants. Take your litter with you.
