See the valley under winter snow

From late December to February, Nathang Valley often lies under deep snow, and the drive over Lungthung becomes a white road between drifts. Spectacular when it works; plan spare days because it often does not.

Snow transforms Nathang. The valley floor, the ridges and the village roofs turn white, the streams freeze at the edges, and the yaks stand out dark against the snow. For many Indian travellers this is the most dramatic snow scene they can reach by road in the Eastern Himalaya.

Getting here in winter depends on the road. After heavy snowfall, the army and road teams may stop vehicles at Zuluk or Lungthung until the road is cleared, and permits are sometimes paused. Black ice is common in the mornings. We plan winter Silk Route trips with at least one spare day, check with Nathang homestays each evening, and follow drivers' calls without argument.

Dress for serious cold, well below freezing even at noon in the shade: down jacket, thermals, waterproof boots, gloves, cap and sunglasses against the glare. Keep children's time in the snow short. Sleep at Zuluk rather than Nathang in deep winter unless you are experienced. Check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

Is Nathang Valley open in winter?

Often, but closures after heavy snowfall are common between December and March, sometimes for several days. Permits may be paused when the road is unsafe. We confirm each evening with homestays and drivers and keep spare days. Check current status before you travel.

How cold is Nathang in January?

Very cold: night temperatures can fall to minus 10 to minus 20 °C, and days often stay below freezing in the shade, with strong wind. Water pipes freeze. Only stay overnight in winter if you are well equipped and acclimatised; most of our guests visit by day from Zuluk.

Can we drive back to Gangtok via Kupup in winter?

Sometimes. The road from Nathang to Kupup and Tsomgo is higher and can close after snow even when the Zuluk side is open. If it is shut, you return to Gangtok the way you came, via Zuluk and Rongli, which takes longer. Plan for both and check current status before you travel.
