The drive above the tree line
The hour from Yumthang to Zero Point is a lesson in altitude: rhododendron and fir forest give way to dwarf shrubs, then bare rock and snow. Ask your driver for two short stops to watch the landscape change.

Leaving Yumthang at about 3,564 m, the road climbs through the upper Shingba forest, where tree rhododendrons and firs thin out quickly. Above roughly 4,000 m the trees stop. Dwarf rhododendron and juniper hug the ground, and then even they give way to scree, boulders and, for much of the year, snow.
This is the only stretch of road in the Lachung valley where you see a full transition from forest to alpine desert in under an hour. Ask your driver to pull over safely at a wide point halfway up for photographs and a breath of air. Stay close to the vehicle; the road edges are loose and traffic, including army trucks, has right of way.
Coming down, the change runs in reverse, and many travellers notice their headache easing as the first trees reappear. That relief is the best reminder of how strongly altitude affects the body.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Is the road to Zero Point dangerous?
It is a narrow mountain road with steep drops, loose edges and, at times, snow and ice. Experienced local drivers handle it daily, and tourist vehicles travel in the safe morning hours. It is closed when conditions are bad. Wear seat belts and do not ask drivers to hurry.
Can we stop for photos on the way to Zero Point?
Short stops at safe, wide points are usually fine. Ask your driver, who knows where it is safe and where army rules forbid photography. Do not stop on bends, near military installations or in the path of convoys, and stay close to the vehicle.
Where does the tree line start on the Zero Point road?
Roughly around 4,000 m, a little above Yumthang. Trees thin through the upper rhododendron and fir forest and stop altogether, leaving low shrubs, grass and then bare rock. The exact line varies with slope and exposure.
