Summer wildflowers around Thangu
From late May into July, the slopes around Thangu and Chopta flower with primulas, poppies and other alpine plants. It is a short season and overlaps with the monsoon, so it suits flexible travellers who accept the risk of road closures.

When the snow melts from the high pastures, alpine flowers follow within weeks. Around Thangu and in the Chopta meadows you may see primulas, louseworts, potentillas and, in places, the blue Himalayan poppy, along with dwarf rhododendrons on the slopes. Wikipedia notes that the Thangu area is adorned with wildflowers in summer.
The catch is timing. The best flowers coincide with the monsoon, when landslides close the North Sikkim Highway often and Gurudongmar trips may be cancelled. Late May and early June offer a reasonable compromise: early flowers and roads that are still usually open.
Never pick flowers or walk across fragile meadows. Photograph from the road edge or a trail, and keep stops short in the cold, thin air.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
When do flowers bloom around Thangu?
From about late May into July, after the snow melts. Peak bloom often falls in late June and July, during the monsoon, when roads are least reliable. Late May and early June give some flowers with a better chance of open roads.
Is the blue poppy found near Thangu?
Himalayan blue poppies grow in parts of North Sikkim's high country, and some visitors report them around Thangu and Chopta. Sightings depend on season and location, so we do not promise them. A local guide gives the best chance.
Is it safe to travel to Thangu in the monsoon?
It is risky. Landslides close the highway often from June to August, and trips can be cancelled or delayed by days. If you go, buy refundable tickets, keep buffer days and check current status before you travel.
