First light on Kangchenjunga from Singhik

Drive up from Mangan before sunrise and watch the first light touch the Kangchenjunga range and Siniolchu at the head of the valley, with Dzongu waking up across the gorge. Clear winter mornings give the best chance.

The best time at Singhik is the first hour after sunrise on a clear day between October and March. The valley below is still in shadow, smoke rises from kitchens in Dzongu, and the snow peaks at the head of the valley catch the sun first. Siniolchu, 6,888 m, stands out for its sharp, steep summit, and the Kangchenjunga massif fills the skyline behind on the clearest days.

Stay in Mangan the night before and leave by about 5:30 to 6 am, depending on the month. It is cold at this hour in winter, so bring a jacket, cap and gloves, and a flask of tea. A zoom lens or binoculars help you pick out the peaks and the Dzongu villages.

Weather decides everything. On a cloudy morning you may see only the near ridges. In that case enjoy the Dzongu view and the village waking up, and try again on the way down from Lachung or Lachen.

Questions travellers ask

Before you book

Can you see Kangchenjunga from Singhik?

Yes, on clear days. The Kangchenjunga range and Siniolchu are visible at the head of the valley, best from October to March in the early morning. Clouds often build by late morning, and from April to September haze and monsoon cloud usually hide the peaks.

What time is sunrise at Singhik?

Sunrise in North Sikkim ranges from about 4:50 am in June to about 6:20 am in late December and January. For views, arrive 15–20 minutes before sunrise and stay an hour. In the clear season, October to March, that means roughly 5:30 to 6:15 am.

Which peaks are visible from Singhik?

On clear days you can usually pick out Siniolchu, a sharp 6,888 m peak, and parts of the Kangchenjunga massif at the head of the Dzongu valley. Exactly which summits show depends on cloud and where you stand. Local people and drivers can point them out.
