Birding morning in the Shingba forest
With a private vehicle and a local guide, spend an early morning birding along the road through the sanctuary. Mixed fir and rhododendron forest holds many Himalayan species, including the hoary-throated barwing recorded here.

Birding in Shingba means slow driving, frequent stops and a lot of listening. Feeding flocks move through the forest in the early morning, mixing tits, warblers, laughingthrushes and other small birds, and a good guide can pick out calls long before you see the birds. Wikipedia lists the hoary-throated barwing and the wood snipe among the sanctuary's species.
Spring brings breeding birds and song; autumn has clearer skies and birds moving down from higher altitudes. Start at first light, carry binoculars and a field guide or app, and wear dull colours. Expect cold fingers until the sun reaches the road.
This works best as a private trip on a second morning in Lachung, or by leaving very early and visiting Yumthang afterwards. Shared jeeps cannot accommodate birding stops. Always stay on the road and follow the guide's lead near steep ground.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
What birds can be seen in Shingba sanctuary?
The mixed forest holds many Himalayan species. Wikipedia records the hoary-throated barwing and the wood snipe for the sanctuary. A local guide will help with tits, warblers, laughingthrushes and others. What you see depends on season, weather and luck.
Do we need a guide for birding in Shingba?
It helps a great deal. A guide knows calls, likely spots and safe places to stop. Guides are not always available in Lachung, so ask us at least a week ahead. Expect about ₹1,500–3,000 for a morning, plus the cost of a private vehicle.
Can we combine birding with Yumthang?
Yes. Leave Lachung at first light, bird slowly through the sanctuary for two or three hours, then continue to Yumthang. You will see the meadow later than most visitors, so cloud may have built up, but the forest is at its best early.
