By shared jeep: take a morning vehicle to Mangan from the Vajra stand in Gangtok and ask to be dropped at Phodong, about 38 km and 1.5 hours away, for roughly ₹300 to 450 a seat. After the monastery, ask your driver or other jeeps about the return, because services thin out in the afternoon. This works for solo and budget travellers who are flexible.
By reserved car: a small car for the day, about ₹3,000 to 4,500, indicative, lets you stop at Tashi View Point, Kabi Lungchok, the Seven Sisters Waterfall, Phodong Monastery and Labrang in one loop, with lunch at Phodong. Leave Gangtok by 8:30 am and expect to be back by late afternoon.
Whichever you choose, the road is winding and slides can close it after rain. NH10 and the North Sikkim Highway close at times in the monsoon. No protected area permit is needed for Indian travellers. Check current status before you travel, and keep an hour in hand for delays.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Can I do Phodong as a day trip from Gangtok?
Yes. It is about 38 km and 1.5 hours each way, so a day leaves time for the monastery, Labrang above it and a stop at Kabi Lungchok. Leave by 8:30 am and plan to be back before dusk. Shared jeep or reserved car both work. Check current status before you travel.
How do I come back from Phodong by shared jeep?
Shared jeeps pass Phodong from Mangan towards Gangtok through the day, but fewer run in the afternoon, so ask your driver or local drivers and do not leave the return until late. A reserved car removes this uncertainty. Check current status before you travel.
Is Phodong open on all days?
The town is, but the monastery may close for prayers or festivals, and some Sikkim monuments have shorter hours on certain days. Check current status before you travel. If your day is fixed, mornings between 9 am and noon are the safest time to arrive.
