Dusk walk through old Lachen
Before dark on arrival, walk up from the highway hotels into the older part of Lachen, where wooden houses, prayer flags and woodpiles show a village shaped by long winters, herding and its own council. Gentle, short and best with a local host.

Most visitors see Lachen only as a strip of hotels on the highway. A short walk uphill leads into the older village: houses of wood and stone with carved window frames, stacks of firewood for the winter, prayer flags and small fields. In the evening, smoke rises from kitchen chimneys and families bring animals in.
Walk slowly. At about 2,750 m, after a long drive, your body is still adjusting, and tomorrow's Gurudongmar trip asks a lot of it. Keep the walk short and gentle, turn back before dark, and carry a torch. Paths can be icy from November to March.
A local host or guide can tell you about the Dzumsa, how the Pipon is chosen, and how the village has coped with years of road closures since 2023. Ask before photographing people and houses, and do not walk into courtyards uninvited.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
Is it safe to walk around Lachen in the evening?
Yes, Lachen is a quiet, friendly village. Walk before dark, carry a torch, watch for icy patches in winter and loose dogs, and keep the walk short so you are rested for Gurudongmar. Stay on village paths rather than heading into forest or army areas.
What is the Dzumsa of Lachen?
The Dzumsa is Lachen's traditional council, which serves as its local government. It is led by an elected headman, the Pipon, with assistants called Gyenbo. Sikkim law recognises it in place of an ordinary panchayat. It sets village rules, including some for visitors.
Should we rest instead of walking in Lachen?
If you feel tired or have a headache after the drive, rest. A gentle 30–45 minute walk helps many people adjust, but it is not essential. The priority in Lachen is water, a light dinner and an early night before the 4–5 am start.
