Walk the Saramsa orchid garden
An easy walk through the orchidarium, glasshouses and lawns of Saramsa Garden, created in its present form in 1975. Spring brings the most flowers, but the shaded paths are pleasant in any dry month.

Saramsa became an orchidarium in 1975, and most of today's plants were introduced between 1975 and 1980. Paths lead past orchid houses, ferneries and beds of tropical and subtropical plants, with lawns and old trees between them. Labels are patchy, so a plant lover will get more out of it than a casual visitor.
The main orchid season runs from March to May, when many species flower at once. Even in other months, ferns, foliage plants and flowering shrubs keep the garden green. Being lower than Gangtok, at about 900 m, it is warm and humid, so morning visits are more comfortable from April onwards.
Allow an hour or so. The garden is on NH717A, about 14 km from Gangtok and 2 km from Ranipool, so it fits easily into an arrival or departure day. Do not pick flowers or take cuttings. Opening hours and fees change; check current status before you travel.

Questions travellers ask
Before you book
When is the best time to see orchids at Saramsa Garden?
March to May is the main flowering season for orchids at Saramsa. Some species flower in late summer and autumn, and the garden stays green year-round. Visit in the morning, when it is cooler and the light is softer. Check current status before you travel for opening hours.
How far is Saramsa Garden from Gangtok?
About 14 km, roughly 30–40 minutes by road. It lies on NH717A, about 2 km from Ranipool towards Pakyong. A local taxi from Gangtok with waiting time costs about ₹1,000–1,500, or you can include it in a Rumtek and Ranka half-day car.
Is Saramsa Garden worth visiting?
For families, plant lovers and anyone passing on the Ranipool road, yes: it is cheap, easy and has an interesting history. It is not a major botanical garden, and labels are limited. If you have only one day in Gangtok, prioritise the town's monasteries and viewpoints.
